Another week almost gone, and so much (other than work) has happened! L and I spent our weekend working, and had a bit of a busy day on Sunday, just steady, nothing too exciting! Sunday was also Solstice, the longest day of the year and the first day of summer, AND Father's Day! Solstice provided over 21 hours of daylight. Just amazing.
After working 8am-8pm we had some dinner and prepared for trying to catch the sun set and rise a couple hours later. We basically had a picnic. We gathered up a blanket, some drinks (maybe a bevvy or two...), some snacks and of course my camera! We weren't sure where we were gonna set up, but just headed out to scope out a spot and we found THE perfect spot - on a dock right on the Yukon River. It was quiet and beautiful with an unobstructed view into the horizon. The temperature was really good until the wee hours of the morning when it got damp and cool. It was simply perfect. One of the things I've always wanted to do here was catch the sun set and then rise so soon after - consider that checked off my bucket list, AND dipping my toes into the Yukon River(FREEZING cold FYI)! Man, I'm really working my way through that bucket list up here in Dawson! We spent the whole night sitting, drinking, snacking and chatting. The sun finally set around 1257am and then we had to wait until 347am for it to come back. UNFORTUNATELY the urge to pee made us bail out a touch early around 330... we just couldn't wait any longer haha. BUT the colours the whole night were spectacular so we didn't feel that bad about bailing.... Also because we had been up since 630am the day before. Bed was just beckoning us. Although I must add, I certainly didn't feel like I had been up that long, the day light does something to your system I swear!
Tuesday, I worked a day shift and oh baby was it busy! Busiest day yet I would say for myself. A bunch of sickies, which is unfortunate for the people.... but it was awesome from an ER nurse perspective! Usually, here there is the odd sickie (small town!) which we nurses can focus on while the rest of the people who check in are definitely less urgent. But Tuesday, there were 4 super sickies (in various degrees of sickie-ness) and 3 nurses. It was a busy - but fantastic day! After that day, a drink was definitely in order, and well earned if I say so myself. Bombay Peggy's (the local Klondike-brothel-turned-brothel-themed-bar-and-B&B) had live music and lots of cold booze after work. The music was provided by Amy Soloway and Stephen Gallant. Amy is also Gertie at Diamond Tooth Gertie's Casino. She does all the singing and is absolutely phenomenal! So to see her more in her element was incredible. She's all about 'Diva's and Broads' and sang Alanis, Anne Murray, Celine Dion, Shania Twain, and Janis Joplin to only name a few, and she absolutely rocked every single artist. We had a great table to enjoy the music, and some pretty great drinks! I had a few different drinks before I found my favourite. I tried a Raspberry Lemonade, a Blueballer (check out Peggy's menu picture below for all their interesting names!) and finally a Lychee Fizz. SO GOOD! I will not disclose how many I may have had (since I know my mother reads my blog) but they were amazing! One guy even rang the bell - which means he buys a round for the ENTIRE bar! He also rang it TWICE! He was pretty happy though; he had just proposed to his now fiance that day, and we weren't gonna say no to a free drink! Biggest lesson of that evening: DO NOT RING THE BELL at ANY bar EVER! After Peggy's we enjoyed the back patio at the Drunken Goat Taverna after hours thanks to some new friends and listened to some VERY greek men tell some pretty funny stories, often ending in a very difficult to understand punchline LOL! Hopefully they remember us next time we eat there haha!
On a more unfortunate note, forest fires have begun to make a pretty smokey landscape. It is insane how much of a difference it has made. The views are all hazy and somewhat non existent anymore. I really really reallllllllyyyy hope we get some good heavy rain (all weekend preferably since I work nights anyways!) to slow down these fires so our Alaskan adventure (which is NEXT FLIPPIN' WEEK!!!!) doesn't get affected. I think as of today there has been 150 wildfires total in the territory, with over 50 000 hectares of land affected... SO sad...! Thankfully it was not smokey for our Solstice night!
All this brings me to today. Today L and I made our way across to West Dawson to check out a shipwreck along the beach since the tide was down nice and low. We did 10km by the time we got home! Lots of beach combing and even made our own little inukshuks on the shoreline. The shipwreck, which no one can tell us the name of and is only referred to as 'the shipwreck graveyard'. It was pretty amazing to realize this structure had been there for (well who knows how long) a very long time and still had canvas from the sails blowing in the wind, random HUGE metal pieces along the sand, and who knows what was on the inside (bones, anyone?!).
Pretty eventful week I've had! Now I have 4 nights ahead of me over the weekend...boo....! Guess I better go to work and stop having all this fun LOL.
Miss everyone back home! I will be home in NO time! I can't believe how quickly time has gone by and how little I have left!
Enjoy some pics! (sorry for all the sunset photos! but it is one of my favourite things!!)
