I finished my 4 night stretch and spent Tuesday by having lunch with my roommates and then went off to a BBQ at a coworkers house for a couple of physician's birthdays! All day it looked like it would rain, but it held off until we all were nicely gathering outside and passing around some munchies - then it pouredddddd! A little rain never hurt anyone, we weren't gonna melt, and we certainly didn't let it dampen the mood (pun intended!). The hospital/clinic community is just fantastic. It was SO nice to be welcomed by everyone and invited to the party, it was a lot of fun and a lot of really great food. It was super great to get to talk to everyone outside of work and get to know everyone a little more.
Wednesday was a full day of Canada Day events! Unfortunately, the rain stuck around - but the parade went on anyways! The parade was around 11 and was short, but really awesome! The floats were things like kids on bikes and horses, the ambulance, firetruck, forest fire fighters among many more. After the parade there was a free BBQ and sheet cake at the museum. We got there a touch late and due to that we got no cake, and no bun for the sausage haha! Ah well! Free is free! In the afternoon we made our way to the Cultural Centre for a Bannock Fry! I FINALLY got some Bannock! I missed it in Manitoba and Bella Bella but got it here in Dawson! Wow, was it ever worth the wait! A hot, crunchy exterior with a soft pillowy centre.... Just delicious! SO easy too!! All it is: Flour, Baking Powder, Salt, Sugar and Water! Form it into a batter and then pan fry in some oil until a light golden brown - then enjoy!! While we waited for the Bannock, L, E, and a new Doc in town, L, sat and chatted with a local man, born and raised here in the Yukon, who has also never left the Territory. He had great stories, including how his Bannock unfortunately turns out more like a hardball haha! Then it was time for the Greatest Klondiker Canadian at the Palace Grand Theatre. A truly beautiful place. The show was of only 5 people and was so funny, with the perk of learning something at the same time. The Klondike times were certainly interesting! It became law once a lot of people started the long trek up to Dawson that you HAVE to bring ONE TONNE of food with you or you won't be let in. Could you imagine how difficult that was? But also quite a smart move on the North West Mounted Police. It was super funny and well done. OH. And free! Klondike Kate's had a great dinner over happy hour beers and great company. L ran into 2 nurses she worked with over 6 years ago in the Cayman Islands..... Can you believe it???! It was a pretty sweet reunion, and really great to meet these friends who travel the country together in their truck and trailor! Last night when I got home and comfy.... I started to itch... itch itch itch! I counted over 30 mosquito bites o my legs last night! Just awful! and I don't even know when I got them..... Not so fun!
I had to work today, and the shift reminded me of the shifts in the winter - dead! Thankfully I had good coworkers on and it was also Staff Appreciate BBQ Day! I wanted the day to fly by so I could get home and pack for ALASKA!!! I seriously am SO pumped to get to go on a road trip with L and G and check out that beautiful state! I will be away until Tuesday night and also without guaranteed wifi, so be prepared for a long post next week! Wish me luck to see a Moose or some Bears!! In the comfort of our car of course haha! We are gonna check out Chicken AK, Tok AK, Haines Junction YT, Kluane National Park, Haines AK and Whitehorse! I can't wait! Now time to get to bed so I can be bright eyed and bushy tailed for the trip to Tok tomorrow! Alaska here we come!!
Home in 28 days!! (But who's counting....!?)
Miss you all!!
